Once upon a time...
The world was in flames. Hades had enslaved the world, revived from the dead, from the crystal that originally took his life. Robin was revived in the process, but the world died. Hades took the residents of Storybrooke back to the Enchanted Forest and enslaved that entire world.
That happened thirty years ago.
Hades stripped Rumplestiltskin of his powers ten years ago. The heroes have fought a resistance, but its been in vain. Hades has grown too powerful for even the savior and the combined powers of the heroes. As time passed, of course, a new generation was born, children of the heroes and their lovers who continued the fight. However, the toll of war is great: all of the heroes we know, Snow White, Belle, Prince Charming, Emma, Henry and many others have died leaving only their children to continue to fight for freedom from Hades.
Finally, the son of Prince Charming and Snow White, Neal, came up with a plan... a plan to stop Hades and return everything back to normal. Time Travel. He had heard from his parents, before they died, about how one was able to travel in time before, due to a spell. A forbidden spell. Many people died as they collected the ingredients, but the spell wouldn't work. Imbuing the spell into a dark curse (retrieved by one of the freedom fighters), during a time when Hades was visiting a different land, the curse brought the entire land back in time...
Hades was defeated, the world started to return to normal. Or as normal as possible in Storybrooke, Maine. However, when people randomly started showing up, not knowing what was going on, the heroes had a lot on their plate. They tried to find families for these newcomers, and soon it became obvious... they were from the future somehow ended up here in Storybrooke.
As it so happened, those from the future landed in the past at staggered intervals. They had come to the right time, though others from the future had not elected to come to the past.
What happens when the future meets the past? Parents meet their possible future children? Will the future be changed? Or will they find that they caused all of it happen in the first place?
